With a seasoned 37-year in-house training program, Gymco’s staff progresses through a four-step technical and philosophical certification on sport development. Gymco’s teachers are safety-certified and first-aid certified. But most importantly, Gymco’s culture that is kid-friendly and energetic. Step in our gym and you’ll feel the difference!

Doreen Bolhuis, President and Founder
Doreen@gymco.com

Doreen Bolhuis is the founder and president of Gymco Sports; creator and a managing partner of Gymtrix; and co-founder of Motion Evolution.

Doreen holds a B.S. in education with a major in Physical Education. She has over 35 years experience teaching locally, nationally and internationally. Doreen is an adjunct professor for Aquinas College and has appeared on local and national television and radio as a guest expert in Physical Literacy. She is also a former elite level gymnastics coach and Junior Olympic Committee member for USA Gymnastics. Doreen is a life-long athlete, embracing the lifestyle promoted in her life work. Her favorite sports include running, trick water skiing, snow skiing, biking, gymnastics and tennis. Doreen also enjoys music and the arts. She plays the cello with the Kent Philharmonia Orchestra and the Ambiance Quartet.

Doreen and Gymco have been recognized with numerous honors. Gymco was named Small Business of the Year by the G.R. Chamber of Commerce. Gymco was named as a top Women Owned Business by the Grand Rapids Business Journal four times and named on the list of 101 Best and Brightest Places to Work by the Michigan Business and Professional Association four times. Doreen has been honored twice as one of the 50 Most Influential Women in West Michigan by the Grand Rapids Business Journal and with the “Inner Circle” award from Inforum. Doreen’s community board service includes the Meijer Gardens Board of Directors, Inforum of West Michigan Council, Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports, the Michigan Fitness Foundation, the West Michigan Policy Forum, and Huntington Bank Women’s Advisory Board.

Education: Aquinas College

Shannon is Gymco’s creative energy and is sometimes referred to as ‘the baby whisperer.’ She has been coaching gymnastics since she was 13 years old! An east-coast native of Gloucester, Mass., Shannon moved to West Michigan 15 years ago and started her Gymco career. Shannon is completing her degree in Psychology at Aquinas… but has never given up her childhood dream of joining the circus!

Outside of Gymco, Shannon loves spending time with her children, bike riding, and wakeboarding. She’s also a national cheer/dance judge for Varsity brands and travels across the U.S. for competitions and events!

Tamara Buyck, Office Manager and Gymnastics Teacher, Level II

Education: Grand Valley State University

Tamara is a self-proclaimed SuperMom whose education and experience shine in her Gymco classes. Her sense of humor keeps kids laughing while they’re learning! She’s recently taken on the role of Office Manager at Gymco, managing day-to-day operations and serving with a smile at our front desk. We’re so grateful to have her!

Outside of Gymco, Tamara loves to spend time with her family.

Colleen, Gymnastics Teacher, Level III

Education: Grand Valley State University

Born in Grand Rapids, Colleen was a Gymco kid! She competed in gymnastics in high school and went on to earn a degree in Physical Education and Health in college. As an adult, she’s a strong advocate for Gymco’s programs… she can testify to the self-confidence and social skills that are gained in the gym.

In her spare time she still enjoys gymnastics – along with crafts, water sports and watching hockey. She spends much of her time with her family and loves watching her daughter Natalie grow and learn new things!

Liz, Gymnastics Teacher, Level II

Education: Calvin College

Liz joined the Gymco team after experiencing Gymco’s programs as a parent and loves being a part of the ‘Gymco family!’ She has a degree in Physical Education and a gift for enthusiastic instruction.

In her own words: ‘I love every minute I spend at Gymco! It’s an awesome experience to see each child progress from week to week.’

Outside of work, Liz can be found spending time with her family – running, cooking and baking, and finding ways to be involved at church.

 

Alec, Gymnastics Teacher, Level II

Alec is fairly new to Gymco, but not to gymnastics… keep an eye out for his awesome parkour-style flips during Open Gym and classes! Alec is a student at Grand Valley State University and loves to spend time with friends & family. His hidden talent? ‘Eating pancakes REALLY fast!’

 

Cody, Gymnastics Teacher, Level II

Education: Moody Bible Institute, Calvin Theological Seminary

Cody leads by example at Gymco – providing kids with support and skills while having tons of fun! He’s currently pursuing his PhD at Calvin.

Outside of Gymco, Cody spends time with his wife, Sarah, and their two young children. His hidden talents include playing string bass, speaking Hebrew and Greek, and juggling!

Amy, Gymnastics Teacher, Level II

Amy is brand-new to the Gymco team… and we’re so excited to have her! She has a passion for teaching and is looking forward to working in our gymnastics program.

Outside of Gymco, you can find Amy doing schoolwork, hanging out with friends and family… and once a year, attending the world-famous Twin Days Festival (with her identical twin sister, Amber)!
