Doreen enjoys being active

Gymco has been locally owned and operated since 1980. Our owners, Shannon Morris and Doreen Bolhuis are also Gymco instructors. They are both actively involved in the daily business of helping kids learn to love fitness!

Doreen Bolhuis – Instructor, President and Founder

Fun fact:  Doreen met her husband Mark in the gym at Central Michigan University and they were cheer stunt partners during college

Doreen grew up in Bloomfield Township, Michigan and moved to Grand Rapids after completing her education at Central Michigan University.  Her major is Physical Education and she taught and coached at East Grand Rapids High School before starting Gymco in 1980.  She is a life-long athlete and enjoys just about every sport.  Her favorites are trick water skiing, paddle boarding, crew rowing and the flying trapeze.  Doreen is a business mentor, author and national speaker on leadership for women. And the Supervisor for Gymco’s competitive Gymnastics team. Shannon Morris – Instructor, CEO and Master Teacher

Fun fact: Shannon has been to every state in the U.S.

Shannon has been at Gymco since 1997 and is a fearless leader in many departments!  She holds a B.A. in Psychology from Aquinas College. Shannon is Gymco’s creative energy and is sometimes referred to as “the baby whisperer.”  She has been coaching gymnastics since she was 13 years old!  An east-coast native of Gloucester, Mass., Shannon moved to West Michigan 20 years ago and started her Gymco career…but has never given up her childhood dream of joining the circus!  Outside of Gymco, Shannon loves spending time with her daughter and son, mountain biking, and wakeboarding.  She’s also a national cheer/dance judge for Varsity brands and travels across the U.S. for competitions and events. She is the Director for Gymco’s competitive Gymnastics team. Over the past 37 years, Gymco has taught over 80,000 students. We pride ourselves in offering a supportive, team-oriented environment. Gymco’s staff is thoroughly trained through a four-step technical and philosophical certification on sport-development. They are safety-certified and first-aid certified. Gymco has an amazing team! Our staff includes educators, coaches, education students, gymnasts, fitness experts. Many of the Gymco team members were Gymco students, and many are parents of Gymco students  

 

Carol Ors – Receptionist

Carol is a transplant from New Jersey and has lived in Grand Rapids for 20 years.  She holds a B.S. in marketing from the University of Dayton.  Carol is married with two daughters and loves spending time with her husband and daughters.  Both of Carol’s daughters attended Gymco. Carol loves working with Gymco families and welcoming new families to Gymco.

 

Cody Hinkle – Instructor, Team Administrator
Fun Fact: Cody is an accomplished juggler

Mr. Cody grew up in Caledonia and he lives in Grand Rapids with his wife Sarah and three children. Cody has been teaching at Gymco for 5 years and enjoys working with our Gymco families and students.  He is pursuing his PhD in Theology at Calvin Theological Seminary and he reads Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic, Akkadian, German and Dutch.  He enjoys music and plays the string bass and the piano in addition to playing soccer and tennis.  Cody enjoys providing kids with support and skills while having tons of fun! email cody@gymco.com

 

Elisabeth Gregory, Instructor

Fun fact: Loves everything Disney and dressing up for Halloween

Miss Elisabeth grew up in Grand Rapids, attended Forest Hills Eastern, where she played soccer.  She is a GRCC student, and works as a nanny.  She loves being with kids, hanging with friends and family, going to soccer games, walking the beach with friends, seeing sunset and sunrise, going on camping trips and traveling. Elisabeth says the best thing about working at Gymco is the kids are so much fun – getting to know them and helping them improve.   

 

Jenna Langerak – Instructor

Miss Jenna grew up in Indiana and attended Heritage Christian High School.  She recently married and moved to Michigan and lives on a little hobby farm where she is learning to can fruit and vegetables. Jenna has also worked as a nanny. She loved sports growing up and played basketball and volleyball.  In her spare time Jenna enjoys reading, cooking, baking, and being active. Jenna loves working at Gymco because she likes being active and working with children and their families.

 

Jessi Duncan – Office Manager

Jessi holds a B.A. in Social Sciences from Aquinas College and certificate in Paralegal Studies from Davenport University.  Jessi is married with three children – Cliona, Liam and Evie and she loves spending time with them. She has experience coaching volleyball, cross country and track and enjoys camping, reading, and drinking coffee.

 

Josh Warner – Instructor

Fun fact: Josh has three fingers on his right hand

Mr. Josh grew up in Cambridge City, Indiana and currently attends Calvin College where he is studying Kinesiology and Pre-Physical therapy.  Josh is on the rugby team at Calvin, and enjoys biking; he regularly rides his bike to Gymco!  Josh played soccer from preschool through high school and he likes to draw and visit local coffee shops of which Squid in Eastown is his favorite.  He describes himself as a pretty fluid person – always evolving and embracing the process. What Josh likes best about working at Gymco are the interpersonal relationships and coaching experience, and growth in leadership and ongoing learning.

 

Jourdan Wait-Parker – Instructor

Fun fact: Jourdan has been to Disney 7 times

Miss Jourdan grew up in Bloomington, Illinois and still lives there with her family when she is not attending school.  She is attending Davenport University where she is studying marketing and is a member of the competitive cheer team.   In her first two years at Davenport Jourdan also participated on the track team in high jump and triple jump.  She has participated in tumbling and gymnastics as an athlete and has taught both in Illinois along with cheer.  What Jourdan likes best about teaching at Gymco is that she gets to meet a lot of new people and gets to teach what she is passionate about!

 

Kara Board – Assistant Office Manager

Kara grew up in Grand Rapids. She graduated from Sparta High School and has continued her education at Community College.  Kara has a son Conner, and a daughter Gabriella – her kids are her everything to her!  She enjoys reading, teaching, playing with her children, DIY crafts, swimming, crocheting, and camping. email: kara@gymco.com

 

Katie Peterson – Instructor & Competitive Team Coach

Fun fact: If she were a cartoon character, she would want to be Rapunzel from Tangled

Miss Katie attends Calvin College and is studying Early Childhood Education.  She was a competitive gymnast for 12 years and also likes ski racing and pole vaulting.  Katie has visited 12 different countries and loves to travel. Katie enjoys coaching Gymco’s competitive team and giving the girls on the team the skills, motivation, and encouragement they need to succeed in competition and in life. Katie love gymnastics and she loves kids, so she loves working at Gymco

 

Lauren Utter Instructor

Miss Lauren was born in Connecticut and moved to Grand Rapids 18 years ago. She is a student at Western Michigan University studying Child Development and Family Services.   Lauren works as a nanny and enjoys playing soccer, volleyball, skiing and snowboarding, cooking and baking. Lauren’s favorite part of working at Gymco is working with families.  

 

Liz Post – Instructor & Special Events Coordinator

Fun fact: Liz’s favorite food is tacos

Liz grew up in Grand Rapids where her family owns an apple farm.   She holds a B.A. from Calvin College majoring in K-12 Physical Education with a Health minor.  She is the busy mom of four children – Grace, Caleb, Evy and Leah.  Liz enjoys bike rides with family and stays active by running and working out at home.  She also loves volunteering and helping out at church and is an active member in her small group there. Liz enjoys working at Gymco because she believes in building confidence and a love for fitness in children.

 

Madi McLean – Instructor

Fun fact: She studied abroad in Australia and New Zealand

Miss Madi grew up in Grand Rapids and graduated from Michigan State University with a B.S. in Kinesiology and a minor in Health Promotion. She plans to study occupational therapy in graduate school. Madi started at Gymco when she was 2 years old and continued until she was 17 years old.  In her free time Madi enjoys running, anything active or “outdoors-y”, watching MSU sports, reading, and traveling. Madi loves working at Gymco because it has always been like her second home and now she gets to coach and teach awesome kids in a sport she loves!

 

Maureen Corpron-Vel – Controller

Fun fact: Maureen is Gymco founder Doreen’s twin sister

Maureen works as Gymco’s controller. She is also a small business owner and works as an estate planner and stager. She raises chickens too. Maureen often brings her chihuahua Tinkerbell to the office with her.

 

Robin Alvarez – Lead Preschool Teacher

Fun fact: Robin is an avid horror movie buff

Robin grew up in Ionia and is a graduate of Michigan State University – go State!  She is married with two daughters, and many pet dog & cats.  She loves spending time with her girls, reading, and walking her dogs. She has been teaching preschool through grade 6 for the past 13 years. Robin loves Gymco because she has the smartest, funniest and strongest preschool students. email: preschool@gymco.com

 

Sandi Booher – Marketing Coordinator

Fun fact: Sandi worked as a news reporter and as a disc jockey

Sandi has worked in radio & print advertising and spent 17 years as a stay at home mom. She is a gourmet cook, an active volunteer in the community, and she homeschools her 2 teenagers.  As a Gymco mom herself, Sandi loves helping parents learn about Gymco. email: marketing@gymco.com
