With a seasoned 30+ year in-house training program, Gymco’s staff progresses through a four-step technical and philosophical certification on sport development. Gymco’s teachers are safety-certified and first-aid certified. But most importantly, we have a culture that is kid-friendly and energetic. Step in our gym and you’ll feel the difference!

doreenDoreen Bolhuis, President and Founder

Doreen Bolhuis is the founder and president of Gymco Inc.; creator and a managing partner of Gymtrix; and co-founder of Motion Evolution.

Doreen holds a B.S. in education with a major in Physical Education. She has over 35 years experience teaching locally, nationally and internationally. Doreen is an adjunct professor for Aquinas College and has appeared on local and national television and radio as a guest expert in Physical Literacy. Doreen is also a former elite level gymnastics coach and Junior Olympic Committee member for USA Gymnastics. Doreen is a life-long athlete, embracing the lifestyle promoted in her life work. Her favorite sports include running, trick water skiing, snow skiing, biking, gymnastics and tennis. Doreen also enjoys a life-long appreciation of music and the arts. She plays the cello with the Kent Philharmonia Orchestra and the Ambiance Quartet.

Doreen and Gymco have been recognize with numerous honors. Gymco was named Small Business of the Year by the G.R. Chamber of Commerce. Gymco was named as a top Women Owned Business by the Grand Rapids Business Journal four times and named on the list of 101 Best and Brightest Places to Work by the Michigan Business and Professional Association four times. Doreen has been honored twice as one of the 50 Most Influential Women in West Michigan by the Grand Rapids Business Journal and with the “Inner Circle” award from Inforum. Doreen’s community board service includes The Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Meijer Gardens Board of Directors, Inforum of West Michigan Council, and Huntington Bank Women’s Advisory Board.

Dana has been employed at Gymco for seven years! She is a Hope College graduate and has lived in Grand Rapids ever since. Dana is the systems & organizational fanatic at Gymco and has a passion for customer service! Her family enjoys bike rides, Lake Michigan, and travel whenever they can.

Joy has been a member of the Gymco Family staff since 1984. Her oldest daughter was coached by Mark and Doreen Bolhuis, and then went on to be a collegiate champion in gymnastics. Joy worked full time for Gymco for many years, and am now semi-retired and work part time. Joy has three children, all who excelled in sports through college, thanks to Gymco. She also has 12 grandchildren, who are the loves of my life. Her hobbies are my dogs, quilting, embroidery, reading and gardening. Joy’s husband Chris and I have been married since 1967.

Luan grew up in Northern Kent County and then moved to Holt, Michigan where she raised three sons. She now has 7 wonderful grandchildren. She enjoys spending time with her family and in her spare time she likes to ride motorcycle, play her dulcimer (narrow, hour-glass shaped, stringed instrument) and she likes to read!

Chad has been with Gymco for 18 years, and serves as Vice President of Programs. His passion for children and people engages him to help and see people grow in confidence and to fully see their potential. He is married to Kelli Shilton, and has a son, Austin, and daughter, Alaina.

Shannon is Gymco’s creative energy and is sometimes referred to as the “baby whisperer.” She has been coaching gymnastics since she was 13 years old! An east-coast native of Gloucester, Mass., Shannon moved to West Michigan 15 years ago and started her Gymco career. Shannon has played many parts at GYMCO, but none as interesting as her most recent, which is Imagination Manager. Shannon is completing her degree in Psychology at Aquinas but has never given up her dream of joining the circus. She loves spending time with her children, bike riding, wakeboarding and most recently took up Hot Yoga. Every day she is reminded why she loves her job, having the ability to change the world, one child at a time.

staceyStacey, Teacher

Stacey's personality is as energetic as her red, curly hair! Stacey always brings a smile and positive and encouraging attitude to the Discovery Program and every class she teaches. She is in her sixth year at Gymco. She also teaches pre-sport and gymnastic classes. Stacey has nannied, volunteered in the church nursery and taught Sunday School, and has worked at the YMCA's Camp Manitou. She has an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts.

Discovery Preschool and Kindergarten Director Jill is in her fifth year at Gymco. Her kind and caring personality, her patience and awesome ideas make Gymco’s Discovery Program one-of-a-kind! Jill has a Masters Degree in social work and a Bachelors Degree in social work and psychology. She also has taken child development classes and has an extensive background in teaching and working with children, including leading community recreation programs and multiple volunteer opportunities and internships.

Kevin is in his third year at Gymco. Kevin’s outgoing and energetic personality makes every day fun for all of our students! Besides working in the Discovery Program, Kevin also teaches pre-sport and gymnastics classes. He also leads our GymTime after school and day camp program. Kevin has experience in sports medicine, physical education and education. Before coming to Gymco, he worked as a swim coach at Watermark and coached various baseball, football and basketball teams. He also has nannied for many local families.

mariaMarla, Teacher

Marla is one of the sweetest people you will ever meet. Her passion for children and excitement for them to learn new things makes her a great asset to the Discovery Program. Marla is in her second year at Gymco, so also teaches pre-sport classes and works with the GymTime after school program. Her experience includes nannying, volunteering at vacation bible school and working with her many young nieces and nephews. She has a Bachelors Degree in exercise science and a certified nurses assistant.

chelseaChelsea, Teacher

Chelsea is a former gymnast who has a passion for teaching kids what shaped her life growing up. She’s currently entering her Senior year at Grand Valley State University studying biomedical science with an emphasis on physical therapy. Growing into the person God has made her to be, she hopes her work at Gymco brings light into each of the athlete’s lives in a positive and healthy way.

bethBeth, Teacher

Beth was born and raised on the east side of Michigan in Royal Oak, but currently resides in Allendale. In the fall of 2008, she began studying Elementary Education and Mathematics at Grand Valley State University. She loves working with kids and staying active, which is why she truly enjoys working at Gymco. She is the founder and President of Grand Valley’s Club Softball team and loves to play board games, and sleep in her spare time.

Katie is entering her senior year at Grand Valley State University. She is persuing a degree in special education and cannot wait to be a teacher. Not only does she love her job at Gymco, she values the experience she has received at Gymco and knows it will help her reach her goals. In her free time, Katie enjoys spending time with her friends and family.

KeithKeith, Teacher

Keith is in his final year at GVSU studying exercise science. He also plays for GVSU men’s club soccer.  He’s excited to be at Gymco working with the kids and teaching them skills they can use for the rest of their lives.  In his spare time he enjoys hanging out with friends and family and playing sports.
