Why are Gymnastics right for any and every child? To start, there are lots and lots of ways both boys and girls of all ages benefit from gymnastics…at Gymco : • First…and always : It’s FUN! •  We teach skills that improve flexibility, coordination and strength. • We help students set goals, work toward them…and then feel good about their accomplishments, so self confidence soars! • Students develop their listening skills and develop cognitive abilities to help in school and at home! • Our students learn social skills when working with instructors and other children their age. • And, the skills learned at Gymco…help children find success in any other sport. At its foundation, gymnastics is an amazing developmental sport that has a profound impact on a child’s entire well-being…AND they don’t need to spend hours upon hours in the gym over-training their bodies to see dramatic effects! It benefits your child physically, academically and socially. Gymnastics provides the proper athletic baseline for any sport your child may want to try. Summer Snacking at Home and on the Go

Gymco brings you :: a guest post from Jen Byrne :: Gymco introduces the first guest post from our nutrition partner, Jen Byrne. We are happy to share with you Jen’s passion to guide and educate children on eating well and helping create a foundation for lasting health family-wide. Learn more about Jen at the end of her post below!  ———————————————– Summer is a glorious time to live in Michigan. Beaches. Parks. Camping. Hiking. Biking. Farmers Markets. Gardens. Bonfires. Pools. It’s an amazing time for families to get outside and explore and spend time together. I don’t know about you but our family seems to hit the ground running when it comes to summer time. There are so many adventures waiting to be had. There is so much sunshine to soak up and sand castles to be built.  ”Think of snacks as mini meals and a way to add extra nutrition to your child’s daily intake.” One of the many mom lessons I have learned over the past several years, is that I don’t leave home without snacks. I have learned the hard way that being prepared with a little snack of some sort can be the difference between a smooth outing [...]

Eating right…and getting Fit4Fun at Gymco!

Gymco got some attention from the news media this week for the work we are doing in bringing nutrition education to our families!  We are thrilled to be seen as a health club for children and be able to teach children from a very young age the concepts of healthy living through physical literacy and nutrition.  The obesity rate in children is three times higher than it was when we started Gymco more than 30 years ago. We want to be able to do all we can to prevent this rate from continuing to grow. While our Preschoolers have been learning nutrition elements for years, we wanted to begin a “Nutrition Initiative” to do more at Gymco.  In the same way we believe physical literacy should start at an early age, we wanted nutrition to be something children are aware of and learn about as early as possible.    Take a look at what’s been happening in the first steps of our “Nutrition Initiative” ::  Healthy Vending… We pulled out our old vending and brought in Fresh and Healthy. We told you about that change in our last blog entry. (click here to read) – – Just this week we welcomed [...]

Gymco is going fresh and healthy…

In American society today, it has become socially acceptable for junk food to be available everywhere we turn, and sometimes it’s the only option we have. With today’s popular and convenient foods and drinks loaded with sodium, sugar, fat, and preservatives, it doesn’t come as a surprise that our younger generations are on track to be the first to live shorter lives than their parents. Incredibly, 12.5 million American children are considered overweight. It’s clear that the way we’re going to turn this around is by getting our children to be more active and helping them eat better. Adding Nutrition to the Equation For more than 30 years, Gymco has focused on teaching kids the importance of physical fitness in a healthy lifestyle…and we’ve made it fun! More and more, we recognize that fitness is only part of the total equation when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle. Now, we are proud to bring the other half of the equation into our “children’s health club”. If you’ve been with us for awhile, you may have noticed that we (ahem…) gave our old vending machine the boot. We found it was full of that socially acceptable “junk”…that may be ok [...]

Play is Work – by Doreen

I attended a business presentation recently and the speaker quoted some statistics that made me sit up and take notice: “45 % of all parents feel they don’t have time to play with their children” (IKEA) “73% of all children think it’s more fun to play with their parents than watch TV”. I often hear parents say that their kids watch too much television. Now you know that YOU are the secret weapon to get your kids active! As difficult as it might seem, make yourself drop the chores and play with your kids. Play a game, go for a walk, to the park, bike riding, do silly dancing to music, cook together, so many possibilities! Take time to be a kid again – with your kids. Every time you stop to play with your kids you make memories, increase the bond between you, and increase their self-esteem. You demonstrate that they are important to you by making time for them. There is no more powerful message than your time and attention! My own kids are grown now and some of the best memories they have are of the endless hours we spent playing together, and we did lots of [...]
