GYMCO, INC. ANNOUNCES SHANNON AUSTHOF AS NEW CEO
Grand Rapids, Michigan – January 7, 2015
After 34 years of leadership at Gymco Inc., Grand Rapids’ top-rated gymnastics and sport facility, Doreen Bolhuis is passing the title of CEO to Shannon Austhof, Gymco’s current Vice President. Austhof will also join Bolhuis in ownership of the local business.
Bolhuis, who founded Gymco in 1980, will retain the President title as she focuses on general oversight and completion of her succession plan over the next two years. Bolhuis will now devote additional time to “GoalCoach,” a consulting/mentoring service for executives, entrepreneurs, and businesses. Bolhuis will also continue her board positions for the West Michigan Policy Forum, Inforum of Michigan Honorary Council, The Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports, and the Michigan Fitness Foundation.
“I am thrilled to transition my CEO responsibilities to Shannon and am confident that she is the right choice for Gymco’s future. Shannon has consistently demonstrated her capable leadership, vision, and innovation at Gymco. She will now build on and enhance Gymco’s legacy for quality service and unique gymnastics and sport programming for the West Michigan community,” Bolhuis said.
Austhof is a lifelong athlete and an 18-year veteran at Gymco who has held multiple leadership titles during her tenure. She has been a catalyst in developing Gymco’s unique lineup of children’s fitness programs and is a driving force behind their high quality standards. She is currently completing a degree in Psychology at Aquinas College and has completed focused studies in early childhood education and business development.
“I am excited about the opportunity to grow with Gymco,” said Austhof. “I knew from the moment I walked in for my first interview that this was ‘home’ for me. I wanted to live at the gym as a child, and now I have the chance of a lifetime to instill that same love of gymnastics and sports in others.”
In her new role, Austhof will lead the Gymco team in strategic planning, new business and product development, training, and future growth.
“Shannon works collaboratively with staff and community partners, empowering others to be and give their best,” Bolhuis said. “She has vast experience in gymnastics, sport development, leadership, business, and Gymco’s mission. I anticipate a bright future and continued success for Gymco under Shannon’s leadership.”
Bolhuis’ planned succession marks the continuation of Gymco as a women-owned business – for which it has been recognized with numerous honors and awards.
“I am deeply honored to have the opportunity to lead the Gymco team in continuing Gymco’s tradition of excellence,” Austhof said. “Moving forward, we will focus on growth by connecting with the community and community leaders while maintaining a strong foundation in our mission, vision and philosophy.”
